Pentecost worship in the diocese

Pentecost worship in the diocese

As our diocese stands once again in a liminal space, Pentecost will be more meaningful than ever for many. It is in this kind of threshold time between the former reality and the as-yet-dimly-seen new reality that the Holy Spirit tends to show up. This portion of the Body of Christ has had more than one chance to learn that.

Please plan to worship with one of our congregations this Sunday, either safely in person, or via live streamed services. The complete list of online worship opportunities is below. Wear red!

The liturgical color for the day is red. Pentecost is one of the seven principal feasts of our church year.  The word means “the fiftieth day” and appears in both the Hebrew and the Christian scriptures.

In the Hebrew scriptures, it was a celebration focusing on the harvesting of first fruits. For us, Pentecost is the seventh Sunday after Easter.  It emphasizes that “the church is understood as the body of Christ which is drawn together and given life by the Holy Spirit. Some understand Pentecost to be the origin and sending out of the church into the world.”

According to the glossary of terms on the website of The Episcopal Church,  “Josephus referred to Pentecost as the fiftieth day after the first day of Passover. The term is used in the NT to refer to the coming of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1), shortly after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension. Christians came to understand the meaning of Pentecost in terms of the gift of the Spirit. The Pentecost event was the fulfillment of a promise which Jesus gave concerning the return of the Holy Spirit.”

Come, Holy Spirit, come.
